The Elkhorn Inn gift shop purchases coal company scrip from reputable dealers so our guests can take home a real piece of West Virginia's history. "I owe my soul to the company store" was not just a song and Definitely not a joke: miners salaries were paid in scrip- coins minted by the coal mining companies- which could be used only in the company store. The Elkhorn Inn was built in 1922 as Empire Coal & Coke Company's "Miner's Clubhouse". Our Gift Shop/Museum Room at the Inn has a growing collection of scrip from Empire Coal, Landgraff, and other mines in McDowell County.
